Convention on Biological Biodiversity (CBD) Print
Welcome to COP 9

cop9logo From 19-30 May 2008 Germany will host the 9th Meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP) to the Convention on Biological Diversity. With Germany as chair, the global community will discuss measures against the ongoing destruction of nature over the coming weeks. The aim is to significantly reduce the rapid loss of biological diversity by the year 2010. One of the most important instruments for achieving this is the establishment of a global network of protected areas by 2010 on land and by 2012 offshore.

The Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) is the first international agreement which comprehensively regulates the management of nature. CBD is one of the three conventions adopted at the World Summit in Rio de Janeiro in 1992, alongside the Framework Convention on Climate Change and the Convention to Combat Desertification.

The approximately 190 contracting Parties to the CBD convene every two years. These conferences are the highest–level decision-making body of the Convention. In addition to the national delegations, a broad spectrum of environmental and development organisations participate actively in the UN conferences. For the upcoming meeting in Germany about 5,000 participants are expected.
