Biologist Thomas Lovejoy once said, “If you take care of birds, you take care of most of the environmental problems in the world.”
It is in the spirit of those words that Denali is highlighting the centennial of the Migratory Bird Treaty Act throughout 2018. In honor of this milestone, nature lovers around the world are joining forces to celebrate the “Year of the Bird” and commit to protecting birds today and for the next hundred years.
Denali is hosting Bird Day events from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on May 12, 2018, at the Murie Science and Learning Center. All-day events include kid’s crafts (make and paint a bird house); drink bird-friendly certified coffee and snacks; bird sightings board and more. Scheduled events include:
- 8 a.m. – Be a Gray Jay Biologist. Join avian ecologist Tucker Grigsby to learn and get involved in Denali’s new citizen science project.
- 9 a.m. – Bird Walk. Take a two-hour stroll with Alaska naturalist Nan Eagleson and avian ecologist Emily Williams.
- 11 a.m. – The Messenger. Enjoy a special screening of a new bird conservation film (1.5 hours) at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.
- 1 p.m. – Be a Bird Conservationist. Join us for a talk by avian ecologist Laura Phillips.
- 4 p.m. – Birdsong and Soundscapes. Join us for a presentation by soundscape ecologist Davyd Betchkal
