Habitat protection for wintering palaearctic migrants

The Forest Unit at the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA), Ibadan has been involved in conservation education for many years. Children of school ages have always been given priority as they are the future scientists. This is achieved through the Ibadan Bird Club (https://web.facebook.com/groups/653034744862182/) and Schools Conservation Clubs around the Ibadan area as part of activities of the A. P. Leventis-funded Ornithological Monitoring Project at IITA (2015-2017).

This year's event of the World Migratory Bird Day will comprise educational activities, birdwatching and display of posters. The event will take place in a garden within the IITA campus, Ibadan, Nigeria. Adewale Awoyemi, IITA Forest Unit Supervisor, who is an ornithologist will give a talk on the significance of habitat protection to wintering palaearctic migrants. He will then lead the group on a bird walk within the garden. This will be followed up by a group photo while displaying posters in lively and imaginative ways. It is anticipated that 30 people will attend the event. This will include staff and students from 8 primary schools and staff of the IITA Forest Unit. The event will be covered by the IITA Communication Office.
