The world`s largest coherent Wadden Sea area and UNESCO World Heritage Site invites you to join the WMBD on the island of Wangerooge. Lying in the centre of the Wadden Sea it is also part of the Wadden Sea Nationalpark of Lower Saxony stretching along the North Sea coast of Germany. Each year more than 12 Mio. waders, waterbirds, gulls and terns follow the East Atlantic Flyway and use the Wadden Sea to fuel up for their long and exhausting journeys between wintering and breeding grounds. Especially during spring and autumn migration the Wadden Sea is a birding hotspot for professional ornithologists, amateurs and nature lovers.
The staff of nationalpark information centre of Wangerooge and the NGO Mellumrat e.V. welcomes everybody to a small wooden platform which we use as a birding site in the eastern part of the island. Experience the magic of bird migration. If wind and weather conditions are fine, you`ll admire beautiful scenic flying flocks of waders which continually change shape and meander over the island, sea and mudflats. You`ll observe long-distance migrants such as Grey Plover, Red Knot and Bar-tailed Godwit in their high tide roosts as well as some species of breeding birds such as Oystercatcher, Common Shelduck and Redshank. You`ll have a nice view over the flowering salt marshes of Wangerooge.
We stay at the platform and for the best watching experience you need a spotter scope, binoculars and maybe nationalpark guides or bird guids. Some spotter scopes and binoculars will be available for you at the platform.
