World Migratory Bird Day (WMBD) 2007 is coming up! For the second time, AEWA and CMS are inviting people, cultures and nations to come together and to celebrate the beauty and ecological importance of migrating birds! Last year more than 46 nations responded to the call and organized events all over the world making WMBD 2006 a great success. These unique events varied from bird watching tours and educational workshops to dramas, exhibitions and film competitions and were held everywhere: in the Arctic region as well as in the savannah, in low valleys and high mountain ranges, in big town halls and small schools all over the world.

You missed WMBD 2006? Join us now and arrange a WMBD activity in your country for 2007! There are many ways of participating: You could invite your neighbours to watch migratory birds, organize rallies or inform your family and friends on the needs of bird conservation.

Kenya

The central WMBD 2006 launching event named ‘WINGS’ took place on the edge of the Great Rift Valley in Kenya. This impressive artistic show reflected the symbolic value of birds and their historic and cultural significance to humans. More than 200 representatives from all over the world and artists from Turkey, India, Peru, Italy, Kenya, Germany and the USA joined this magnificent event.

Romania

In Romania, the whole country celebrated WMBD! They incorporated WMBD into the national Romanian Bird Day. Nationwide, children and adults participated in an impressive variety of activities such as cleaning nests, bird watching and bird drawing. All events were supported and transmitted by the Romanian radio and TV stations.

Sierra Leone

During WMBD 2006, the conservation society of Sierra Leone inspired children on migratory bird issues. They organised activities specifically aimed at children, such as a nature drama competition, educational workshops and the distribution of posters and t-shirts. The highlight of the Sierra Leone WMBD day was a thrilling parade in the streets of Freetown.

France

In France, the WMBD took place in Somme’s Bay, one of the most beautiful bays in the world! Amidst this impressive scenery, the two-day festival offered guided bird walks, workshops and a spectacular photo competition. Children also celebrated the WMBD by participating in special workshops for children.

Seychelles

In 2006, the beautiful Cousin and Amhe Islands attracted people to celebrate the phenomenom of migratory birds. Here, in the heart of the Indian Ocean, Nature Seychelles arranged a spectacular festival: they offered traditional bird walks and exciting island tours that included the observation and the recording of sea bird species.

Colombia

In Colombia, the environmental organisation ALAS invited sixteen children between 6 and 13 years of age as well as their teacher to an educational workshop about migratory birds. Together with the children, ALAS developed strategies on how to be “friendly” to birds. The children participated in the workshop with enthusiasm and the activity ended with a drawing session of their favourite birds.

USA

The birders of Edmonds, Washington celebrated the WMBD on the Puget Sound Bird Fest. This entertaining festival offered a wide range of different activities such as observing birds from buses and boats, workshops for children and the unique possibility to view over 200 species of birds that live around Edmonds!
