International flyway conservation projects

  • Wings Over Wetlands: The African-Eurasian Flyways Project. Wings Over Wetlands (WOW) aimed to improve the conservation of African-Eurasian migratory waterbirds through implementing measures to conserve the critical network of sites that these birds require to complete their annual cycle.
  • The Western Hemisphere Migratory Species Initiative. The mission of The Western Hemisphere Migratory Species Initiative (WHMSI) is to contribute significantly to the conservation of the migratory species of the Western Hemisphere.
  • Migrating Soaring Birds in the Middle East and North Africa. BirdLife's Migratory Soaring Birds project will ensure that migratory bird conservation needs are incorporated into the sectors where the main threats to these birds originate – primarily energy, agriculture, waste management, development and tourism.
  • The Siberian Crane Wetland Project (SCWP). The SCWP is a six-year effort to sustain the ecological integrity of a network of globally important wetlands in Asia that are of critical importance for migratory waterbirds and other wetland biodiversity.

  • AEWA. The Agreement on the Conservation of African-Eurasian Migratory Waterbirds (also known as AEWA or African-Eurasian Waterbird Agreement) aims to maintain or restore populations of waterbird species at a favourable conservation status.
  • International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). IUCN is the world's largest conservation network. The Union's mission is to influence, encourage and assist societies throughout the world to conserve the integrity and diversity of nature.
  • BirdLife International. BirdLife International is a global Partnership of conservation organisations that strives to conserve birds, their habitats and global biodiversity, working with people towards sustainability in the use of natural resources.
  • Convention on Migratory Species (CMS). The Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (also known as CMS or Bonn Convention) aims to conserve terrestrial, marine and avian migratory species throughout their range.
  • International Council for Game and Wildlife Conservation. The International Council for Game and Wildlife Conservation is a politically independent advisory body internationally active on a non-profit basis.
  • International Migratory Bird Day (IMBD). IMBD was created in 1993 by visionaries at the Smithsonian Migratory Bird Center and the Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology.
  • United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). UNEP is the voice for the environment within the United Nations system. UNEP's mission is to provide leadership and encourage partnership in caring for the environment.
  • Wetlands International. Wetlands International is the only global NGO dedicated to the conservation and wise use of wetlands. They work globally, regionally and nationally to achieve the conservation and wise use of wetlands, to benefit diversity and human well-being.
  • The Partnership for the East Asian - Australasian Flyway. The Partnership is an informal and voluntary initiative, aimed at protecting migratory waterbirds, their habitats and the livelihoods of people dependent upon them.
