Each year, World Migratory Bird Day reminds us of the awe-inspiring journeys millions of birds undertake – crossing continents, connecting ecosystems and inspiring cultures across the globe. 2025’s theme of “Creating bird-friendly cities and communities” gives us an incredible opportunity to reimagine the way we share our spaces with nature and take meaningful steps toward a more harmonious future.
Urban areas are growing rapidly, but with thoughtful planning and innovative action, cities can become sanctuaries – not threats – for migratory birds. By integrating green spaces, reducing light pollution and designing with biodiversity in mind, we can transform urban landscapes into vibrant, bird-friendly environments. From the Rufous Hummingbird to the Chimney Swift, birds enrich our lives with their presence. Ensuring their safe passage through our communities is a responsibility we all share – and a goal we can all help achieve together.
At IUCN, we believe that reconnecting people with nature lies at the heart of lasting conservation. Strong policies, community engagement and global cooperation are essential to protecting the species and ecosystems we all depend on. We especially urge global alignment across instruments like the Convention on Migratory Species to ensure species most at risk receive the protection they urgently need.
We’re proud to support World Migratory Bird Day and the global movement it represents. Through our Members, Commissions and the IUCN Urban Toolbox, we are working to ensure that every city and community has the tools to safeguard nature. Together, we can create places where people and birds not only coexist but thrive together.
We look forward to continuing these conversations at the IUCN World Conservation Congress in Abu Dhabi this October. Let us move forward together – with hope, determination and a shared purpose – to shape a world where migratory birds can soar safely over cities that care.
