Bon Voyage Shorebirds

Visit any Midwest beach and you will find a variety of shorebirds, including migratory birds. Did you know that many of the birds at the beach are leaving to fly 12500 km to the northern Arctic?  They will face many difficulties along the way including loss of habitat and tons of plastic litter. Did you know Australia, including Midwest WA, hosts 80% of the worldwide population of many species of  Arctic breeding shorebirds during the Arctic winter (Australian summer) months? Did you know that many types of young migratory shorebirds spend the first few years of life in Australia before they begin annual migrations north? Learn about these amazing birds; why they come and why they go.
