Plastic Pollution Scavenger Hunt and Matching Game

Los Angeles Audubon Society is a non profit organization that focuses on education and restoration of natural habitats in the Los Angeles area. Exceptional Children’s Foundation (ECF) is also a non-profit that offers a training program to children and adults with developmental, learning, and emotional disabilities around the world. Los Angeles Audubon worked with the ECF branch located in Inglewood to raise awareness and educate participants about ways in which we can protect birds from plastic pollution. These activities were held at Kenneth Hahn State Recreation Area which is park both organizations share with their local community. The first activity we did was the world migratory matching game. In this game there is a list of birds that are being affected by plastic pollution. With that list there is also a list of descriptions of ways in which the birds are being affected directly. For example: eats microplastics or becomes entangled. With some of the descriptions there’s also characteristics of the bird listed making it easier to guess which bird matches the description. As a group, ECF clients read and matched descriptions using a process of elimination. During the activity participants learned about birds and their struggle with staying alive in their habitats. After they matched all birds with their correct descriptions I gave a quick plastic talk. In the talk, I mentioned how we can help by using reusable products instead of single-use plastics or host a trash clean-up in our community. We transitioned to the scavenger hunt where ECF clients and I walked around the park picking up specific trash. After thirty minutes of looking for plastic items we tallied up how much we managed to clean. In the end we picked up 561 total numbers of plastic. ECF clients were surprised at the amount we cleaned and made a pledge to pick up plastic pollution wherever they see it.
