Why should you care?

Of the over 10,000 species of birds on this planet, only about 15% of them participate in migration. However, this small percentage includes many of our favorite and well-known backyard birds, such as American goldfinches, painted buntings, and American robins.

Unfortunately, migration is also one of the most dangerous times for these species, and these dangers often come from our own actions. Window collisions, loss of habitats, outdoor cats, and trapping for the illegal trade are just some of the threats faced by migratory birds every year.

Luckily, although we are part of the problem, we can be part of the solution! Simple actions such as planting native plants in your garden, placing anti-collision tape on reflective windows, and turning unneeded lights off at night during migration season can help save hundreds of these birds from an untimely death. Join us at Zoo Atlanta to celebrate World Migratory Bird Day, and learn more about these amazing birds and what you can do to help them on their incredible journey!
