Bird Day at Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area

Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area is hosting its first “Bird Day” on Saturday, July 21, at the Cal S. Taggart Visitor Center. The free event commemorates the centennial of the Migratory Bird Treaty Act.

The celebration starts at 10 a.m. as representatives from the National Park Service, the Audubon Rockies Education Office, and the Draper Museum Live Raptor Program from the Buffalo Bill Center of the West offer up a wide variety of programs, and information tables.

Activities in the morning will include the Bird Hurdles, a heart-racing activity that allows kids and adults to learn about the struggles migratory birds face and the Bird Olympics, an opportunity for participants to measure up against some of the most impressive birds of the world.

Melissa Hill, the assistant curator in charge of live raptors, will present a special program at 1 p.m. in the Visitor Center Auditorium, which includes a live red-tailed hawk, peregrine falcon, great horned owl, and golden eagle. She will discuss what makes raptors special and how their unique traits allow them to thrive in Wyoming and Montana.

“Over 230 birds are found in the varied habitats of Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area, and it’s an amazing feeling to see them flying in the air or hear their call," said park ranger Todd Johnson, who is organizing the event.
