The BPQ World Migratory Bird Day Blitz

It’s a one-day birdwatching blitz to see, or hear, and count as many species and individuals as possible during this most exciting period of the birding year. Choose your favorite birding site in our region, be it your own backyard, a local park or somewhere a little further afield, on or off the island of Montreal, and simply go birding. Bird alone or with a group of birding buddies for as long or short a period of time on May 12th as you like. Bird casually, or bird intensely, but do it… just bird!

How to participate

We simply ask that you register with us in advance by e-mail as soon as possible at [email protected] indicating which specific location or area you’ll be birding. We’d like to cover as many different locations in our region as possible. We ask that you record your results for the day and then submit the following information to us (much like a Christmas Bird Count – minus the heavy clothes and frostbite!).

You will be provided with a worksheet for the day and a form to return to us by e-mail with your results.

  • a list of species seen
  • an approximate number of birds of each species seen
  • total hours spent birding, on foot and by car
  • total distance covered, on foot and by car
  • details of area(s) covered

Our committee will compile the information to create a master list for the day, crunching the data to produce some statistics to share with everyone.

Prefer to bird in a group?

For those birders preferring to participate with a group of birders in a more conventional field trip for the day, we will have a few field trip leaders conducting group bird walks at two centrally located Montreal birding spots, namely Mount Royal Cemetery in Montreal and Parc des Rapides in LaSalle.

Don’t miss the “après-birding” party!

Following the day of birding we are planning a very informal “après-birding” gathering at a centrally located restaurant for anyone wishing to mingle, have dinner (at your expense) and share some of the experiences from the day.
