Wings, Waves & Woods Birding Festival on Deer Isle

Celebrate the Year of the Bird on one of Maine's most visitable islands. This 3-day event combines birding on foot, by boat and by air in a small plane!
Specifically welcoming to families and beginners, this festival offers two dozen activities starting Friday with a boat trip out to Swan's Island, followed by a special birder's supper at the Whale's Rib Tavern that includes a talk by Bob Duchesne, founder of the Maine Birding Trail. Two trips to Seal Island offer sightings of Atlantic Puffins, Razorbills, Northern Gannets and others. Up to two dozen species of warblers may be seen on the several guided walks on the island's nine preserves; as well as shore birds nesting and breeding along our extensive shoreline. New this year is an informal grilled dinner on the deck of the aptly-named Inn on the Harbor. Afterwards, stroll across the street to the Stonington Town Hall to hear Bonnie Bochan talk about long distance migrants, drawing on her lifelong career in both Ecuador and Maine researching and teaching about avian migrants. Kids will enjoy the live owl demo and learning how to use binoculars at Island Heritage Trust. Take in just one activity or make it a full weekend.
