World Migratory Bird Day & 75th Anniversary of Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge

“Year of the Bird” is the conservation theme for this year’s World Migratory Bird Day celebration.  It complements well, the 75th anniversary of Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge, originally established May 13, 1943 to provide habitat for migratory birds (with an emphasis on conserving greater snow geese).

On Saturday, May 12 from 10 AM - 3:00 PM, Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge teams up with the Chincoteague Natural History Association to offer visitors a fun-filled day of family friendly activities.  The historic Assateague Lighthouse opens for climbs at 9 AM. Special movies will be shown periodically, in the auditorium, throughout the day.  At Noon, join us for the Children’s Art Contest Award Ceremony.  At 1 PM, join rangers from the Assateague State Park in the refuge auditorium for the ever popular “Scales and Tales”, live raptors and reptiles program.  Join us in the classroom at 2 PM for Anniversary cake.
