Highlands Center Migratory Bird Fest – Family Nature Festival

Did you know migrating hummingbirds can fly hundreds of miles across deserts, mountains, and even oceans and can survive freezing overnight temperatures by lowering their heart rate? Families can learn about this and more during World Migratory Bird Day at the Migratory Bird Family Nature Fest on Saturday, May 11, from 9 a.m. to noon in the James Family Discovery Gardens at the Highlands Center in Prescott. This year’s World Migratory Bird Day international theme is “Protect Birds: Be the Solution to Plastic Pollution.” The Prescott Forest Service will be available to advise visitors on the best way to share the world with our feathered friends. Jay’s Bird Barn will also be onsite to share what unexpected organisms live in our bird feeders, and how to best maintain these hanging havens. Prescott Audubon Society will also be on hand to answer questions. The Migratory Bird Fest celebrates the importance of birds in our lives: the wonder and that they inspire, and the roles they play in the web of life. Attendees can also explore the behavior of hummingbirds and ravens, create bird feeders and nests, and stop at the Migration Stations. Admission is $6 for adults and $4 for youth. Highland Center members are free. Register at highlandscenter.org.
