2.  Saturday, October 8, 2022  MIGRATORY BIRD DAY - Will you spot a bird that flew all the way from North America to Manabi for its vacation?

October Big Day, the gold cup of world birding - Spend the day in honor of the birds!

        A.  Experienced Birders:  From Rocafuerte to Refugio de la Tomatera to various city parks, the birds of the area deserve to be documented!    'Hard-core Birding' for experienced birders, this day is for documenting species.  If you plan to bird with Lisa, you are warned:  food breaks will be sparse - on site or while in transit from one location to another.   You can also help for a short time -  an hour or a few hours or the entire day - experienced help will be greatly appreciated.  Contact Lisa:  [email protected]

        B.  Casual Birders:  You can also make a difference!  Spend half an hour or an hour and see how many species you can identify in your home or nearby park.  Perhaps you'll see a migratory bird - even a rare one.    Upload your data to eBird and give your neighborhood birds a voice.

Sunday, October 9, 2022  - Birding Walk at Parque Las Vegas - 2:00 - 4:00 pm:    (Google GPS)

Meeting at the little laguna/seguita, we will exchange random trivia about the birds that call that little wetland home, and why feeding bread and rice to the birds is not beneficial for the birds.     The importance of native trees will become obvious when we peer skyward into the limbs of the Tierra Espina and Frutila trees that not only shade the ground, but also provide food for many species.  A walk along the river provides glimpses into the importance of grasses (and seeds) for the smaller species, some that are less abundant than they were four or more years ago.    Lisa will also point out subtle changes in the park's maintenance and upkeep - many differences that most would not notice - but a shift in the park management's sensitivity for nature.   It's rewarding to witness these improvements.

*(Image above: The Burrowing Owl lurks in the shadows - or presides over the park from a roof-top perch, but it has been forced into many adaptations in the past half year.)

We honor the birds that live here full time, and we honor those migratory species that select Manabi for their winter vacation. Migratory birds, some which have been flying nonstop, need food and shelter.   Although this is a weekend to honor the birds, we must remember that EVERY day is of importance for their survival (and ours.)

Millions of birds are migrating now; watch this animated map that shows the hourly changes - amazing!  BIRDCAST LIVE ANIMATION
