Ponderosa State Park hosts local 'Bird Day'

Ideas and actions that can help birds throughout the year, and across differing bird habitats, will be explored on Bird Day, a local celebration of World Migratory Bird Day in McCall at Ponderosa State Park on May 26, according to a news release from the park. Ideas such as transforming backyards into safe stopover sites with native vegetation, fresh water, and keeping cats indoors are some of the scheduled activities. The event is hosted by Ponderosa State Park in cooperation with Idaho Department of Fish and Game and the Payette National Forest.

Activities in the park will include:

8 to 10 a.m. — Take a buddy birding and join the bird walk led by Diane Evans Mack, local birder with Idaho Fish and Game. Meet at the Fox Run trail head.

10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. — Activities for all ages, including a Junior Rangers program. Meet at the Activity Center.

Be sure to wear appropriate clothing for hiking. Also, bring some cash — there is a $5 Motor Vehicle Entrance Fee to the park, unless you have a valid Idaho Passport or Idaho Annual Pass attached to your vehicle.

World Migratory Bird Day was May 12. It is an international celebration of the hundreds of bird species that migrate between their nesting habitats in North America and wintering grounds in Latin America, Mexico, and the Caribbean. The theme for this year is “Year of the Bird.” This is its 25th year with expansion across the globe.
